BāZì

Every fortune has a price.

Ren

THE TRADER / THE BELIEVER

Mixed heritage and instinctive in the way only very good traders can be, Ren hides fear behind provocation and an easy smile. He can put a price on any position. What his own luck will cost him is harder to calculate.

Théo

THE THERAPIST / THE SKEPTIC

French, composed, and trained to look beneath what people say, Théo approaches Ren's certainty through neuroscience and cognitive science. He is less interested in whether Ren is right than in understanding why he needs to be.

Ren can read the markets through fate. Now he has read his own death - thirty days from now.

Born into a family of fortune-tellers, he trades on the readings of an antique brass watch passed down through generations. The money comes. So do the accidents around him. Out of options, he seeks out Théo, a French therapist whose clinical view of the mind leaves little room for destiny. What begins as a disagreement over what can be predicted becomes a question neither of them can dismiss - and the clock is running.

A life already read. / A debt still unpaid.

BāZì takes its name from 八字, the Eight Characters of Chinese destiny reading. In Ren's world, inherited knowledge meets modern finance, and the line between prediction, coincidence and consequence begins to blur. At the centre is an antique brass pocket watch marked by the Twelve Earthly Branches, its second hand keeping a time of its own. Ren believes his luck comes at a cost. Théo suspects the real cost lies somewhere else.

"I calculated my own death. Next month."
